Fancy giving your Instagram a boost? Things are about to get even more fun in Tilburg. A proper ‘selfie spot’ is being created right in the middle of Tilburg’s Pieter Vreedeplein. The industrial sculpture is intended to make the square more popular and attract more visitors to the city.

The design is modern: a large concrete block with T-shaped cut-outs. When you stand inside the artwork, you can see various Tilburg landmarks through the openings, such as the Heuvelse Church. It will be a while yet before the selfie spot is ready, as the residential tower on Vreedeplein has to be built first.

The Amsterdam effect

Tilburg has long wanted a selfie spot. It’s good for city marketing. In Amsterdam, it proved to be a huge tourist attraction. The capital even removed the popular ‘I Amsterdam’ letters because too many tourists were flocking to them. That caused quite a stir. In Tilburg, all tourists are welcome. The city is welcoming more and more visitors; the 013 music venue, for example, attracted a record number of visitors last year. Nevertheless, Tilburg isn’t worried about an excess of visitors for the time being. Around 40,000 euros has been set aside for the selfie spot; three-quarters of that amount is being paid for by the Entrepreneurs’ Fund and the square’s owner, Wereldhave. Part of it is being funded by the council.
